It’s Time To Be More Sensible

It’s Time To Be More Sensible

Being sensible means being practical and reasonable and not allowing your impulses to drive the course of your life. For a large proportion of the world’s population, being sensible is hard, specially because human beings tend to be spontaneous creatures who like to make the most of their existence and therefore, don’t see long-term planning as a necessity.

However, having your head on your shoulders will, in the long run, save you from having to endure more substantial hardships, and this, in turn, will make your life easier. If you have gradually been taking steps towards becoming a more responsible person, but you think you still have a long way to go, here’s how to be a more sensible individual.

Plan for the best

If you would like to live your retired years in style, you will need to put in a lot of hard work while you are still young and kicking hard. Accepting that life is not a walk in the park will get you far when you are trying to make your later years easier and more enjoyable. If you are in your mid to late thirties, chances are you are taking home a substantial amount of money at the end of the month. While you might think this is something you would like to spend without having to save any money, this mindset will not take you very far when it comes to preparing for your later years. If you are making enough money for you to save a few hundred or thousand pounds every month, you should ensure you put this aside regularly. Imagine retiring in a Mediterranean country, or having the house of your dreams in your home country? This is not hard to do if you have savings.

But expect the worst

We are all heading towards the same direction. Our lives are a blessing, as we have been given the opportunity to experience what it is like to be on this planet. However, this is not something we should take for granted, at least not too much. Many are the lives that have been claimed early, and while this is not to say that you should live in fear of when your time will come, it is a reminder that life can change in a split second and that is why we should be prepared for the best and the worst our existences offer. Enjoy your life while you are young and in good health, but don’t forget to make plans for events that, even if they are hard to think about, we have no control over. Compare funeral directors and make arrangements while you can.

Accept that sometimes letting go is the best answer

Human beings have been known for overthinking and over analysing. This is not because they like to torture themselves (although one would think they sometimes come pretty close to it), but because our brains have been programmed for us to think about danger in order to avert it. While we must sometimes think endlessly in order for us to solve a given problem, often it is healthy for us to take a step back and let life surprise us with whatever it wants to show us. Wanting to have control over events is not a sensible thing to do as life is unpredictable, and the only constant is change, as a famous Greek philosopher once said. Accept that it is impossible for us to control our surroundings and move on.
