Once winter comes around, one of the main parts of our home that we will become heavily reliant on will be our central heating system. In the 1930s, Britain got the first glimpse of its new central heating system, heavy cast iron radiators that heated the home. Now, 90 years later, the central heating system has spread to 95% of British households, keeping us warm during bitter winters, so it can be a pain when our central heating starts to show signs of breaking down. Fortunately, there are ways that you can protect your heating system and help it last a few more years. Here are 4 ways to protect your heating system so it can have a longer life.

Insulating Pipes

Over time, your pipes begin to show wear and tear, which begins to have a troubling effect on your heating system. Corrosion, frozen pipes, and leaks could all spell trouble for your pipes and the system. One way of preventing this from happening is to insulate your pipes. Some home improvement retailers have insulation tapes similar to Denso tape, which is strong and durable enough to cover your pipes. This ensures that it is protected from cold water, protects against corrosion, and takes care of possible leaks that may occur.

Flushing the System

Your radiator pulls in water every time you use it, and over time, debris and limescale build up in your system, causing your central heating to stop working at full capacity. As this happens, you will see that it causes your heater to remain cold when you want it to heat up, it will make strange rattling noises and require frequent bleeding. Flushing your system out is an excellent way of getting rid of all the excesses that build up in your system over time.

Regular Checks For Leaks

Leaks in your home are never a good thing because you won’t know that they are there until it’s too late. This is why it’s so important to get your boiler, pipes and walls checked for leaks, especially since it could cause some severe damage to the structure of your home. There are three ways to know if there is a leak, either a leaky boiler, your radiator is leaking, or you’ve encountered a drop in water pressure. In a worst-case scenario, water from a leaky pipe can pool in your wall or the ceiling, causing the affected area to warp and leak water. Regular checks of your central heating system can reassure you that it never gets that far and assures that you can repair it quickly.

Eco Mode If you’re looking for a way to save money on your energy bill, then using Eco Mode is one of your options. According to Rightio, “the Eco-Mode means that your pre-heating function will be off. In Eco-Mode the water is not preheated.” However, that doesn’t mean that you’ll be using cold water all the time or waiting for your water to heat up. In fact, in this mode, it means that water will heat up when the tap is opened, but not before. As a result, Eco mode also uses less energy to heat your water, saving you money on your next energy bill.
